Guess I'll get the ball rollin' with a thread about ANY new comic related news . . . don't know if anyone heard but Heath Ledger (The Joker in the new Batman flick) was found dead today, I believe from drug overdose.

Heath Ledger 28 found dead in NYC apartment
Authorities say actor’s death likely suicide or accidental overdose

NEW YORK - Heath Ledger, the talented 28-year-old actor who gravitated toward dark, brooding roles that defied his leading-man looks, was found dead Tuesday in a Manhattan apartment, face-down and naked at the foot of his bed with prescription sleeping pills nearby, police said.

There was no obvious indication of suicide, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said.

Ledger’s publicist, Mara Buxbaum, issued a statement this Tuesday night, saying, “We are all deeply saddened and shocked by this accident. This is an extremely difficult time for his loved ones and we are asking the media to please respect the family’s privacy.”

And in what may be his final finished performance, Ledger proved that he wouldn’t be intimidated by taking on a character as iconic as Jack Nicholson’s Joker. Ledger’s version of the Batman villain, glimpsed in early teaser trailers, made it clear that his Joker would be less comical and more depraved and dark.

Curiosity to see Ledger’s final performance will likely further stoke interest in the summer blockbuster. “Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan said earlier this month that Ledger’s performance as the Joker would be wildly different than Jack Nicholson’s memorable turn in 1989’s “Batman.”

Yes I guess he will be Missed.
So can anyone clear up what is with the youth of Hollywood?
And all these young Famous types who seem to have everything.
And then everything goes to pot and or REHAB or Death?
What an extreme waste of life!

in all do fairness Taz. There has been no evidence that his death was drug related.

I deleted the other posts about Heath Ledger, the topic I started. I didn't realize that KER had opened up this news item under the topic title. Sorry about that.

I'm not terribly saddened by it. I mean, I'm human and I feel sorry for the family and his daughter. It will be interesting to hear the tox report and find out if this was an accident or suicide.

That said, how many regular people die each hour from accidentally overdoses and don't get the press about it? I have sympathy for most good people who meet with unfortunate ends.

Well said Force, how many soldiers have died and there's no mention of their names? But somehow the guy who played for the Cardinals in the NFL is all over the news. So many people die these kinds of deaths every day and there is never a mention of their names for days on end. The "powers that be" in the media do this kinda crap all the time, they make "news" out of anything. How many times have we heard about some actor like Robert Deniro or Meryl Streep who considered considered a genius, but how many people know the name of the guy who did the first open heart surgery? It's sad . . . . who gives a damn about Brittney's latest breakdown or Ashley Simpson's latest plastic surgery? . . . Anyway I've rambled on enough this IS the COMIC JIVE thread, I'll keep my future thoughts like this in the "Thread for rants" . . . lol

Dennis Quaid and Arnold Vosloo have joined director Stephen Sommers' G.I. Joe cast, according to Variety and IESB.net.

Quaid will play General Hawk, the grizzled team leader, and Arnold Vosloo will play Zartan, a mercenary who works with Destro and Cobra. The action-adventure, coming to theaters on August 7, 2009, is scheduled to shoot next month in Los Angeles.

The two join the previously-announced Channing Tatum (Duke), Ray Park (Snake Eyes), Marlon Wayans (Ripcord), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Rex), Rachel Nichols (Scarlett), Sienna Miller (The Baroness), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje Heavy Duty), Said Taghmaoui (Breaker) abd Byung-hun Lee (Storm Shadow) in the live-action feature.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who is coming off Transformers, is producing with Brian Goldner. Latter is the point person for Hasbro's venerable action figure line. Sommers and partner Bob Ducsay are also involved in producing capacities. Stuart Beattie wrote the most recent script draft.

PostPosted: Tue Jan 29, 2008 4:27 pm    Post subject: MARVEL STUDIOS Reply with quote

Marvel Studios, a subsidiary of Marvel Entertainment, Inc., and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) announced today that they have reached an interim comprehensive agreement that will put writers immediately back to work on the Marvel Studios development slate. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"We're very excited about our summer releases, 'Iron Man' and 'The Incredible Hulk,' and look forward to resuming work with writers on our future projects including 'Captain America,' 'Thor,' 'Ant-Man,' and 'The Avengers,'" said Marvel Studios Chairman David Maisel.

"Marvel Studios' signing of an interim agreement with the Writers Guild is more good news for our membership," said WGAE President Michael Winship and WGAW President Patric M. Verrone. "Marvel is committed to fairly compensating their writers and now they can move forward with their planned production schedule."

Marvel Studios recently launched its independent live-action film studio to develop, produce, and fully finance Marvel movies, which will include two of this summer's most anticipated releases - Iron Man (Directed by Jon Favreau) and The Incredible Hulk.

*Iron Man will be released by Paramount Pictures on May 2, 2008, and stars Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow.

*The Incredible Hulk, which will be released by Universal Pictures on June 13, 2008, is directed by Louis Leterrier and stars Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, and William Hurt.

In cooperation with other studios, Marvel previously produced a long succession of hits, including the "Spider-Man," "X-Men," and "Fantastic Four" franchises, Ghost Rider, and Daredevil.

The WGA recently entered into interim agreements with The Weinstein Company, United Artists, Lionsgate, Worldwide Pants, Spyglass Entertainment, MRC, Jackson Bites, Mandate Films, and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment.

Wow, to think Comics used to be a despised medium. Isn't kind of weird that back in the day it was embarressing to be in the industry but it was actually doing pretty well, as far as sales were concerned. Now comics are a little more mainstream and acceptable but sales are still low? huh?
