The Spirit I rarely use this 2D converted to 3D technique used here as it's more difficult than the results validate, IMO... at least here but I don't think pure 3D could capture Eisner's style (although my drawings still can't hold a candle to his!). Still... last time I attempted this technique was with my collaboration with Shade, a piece which has drawn more hits than anything else I'd done (narrowly edging out my collab with Star). Anyways, to Will Eisner...cheers! |

Man, there is just something fluid and...I wanna say meaty for some reason, about this. There's some sort of viscerality to the faces, I like how nothing, except maybe the dame, is idealized. The thugs are gritty and ugly and real, and even Denny Colt hisself isn't looking so pretty. This is definitely one of my faves of your work, LP!

Thanks for the very kind comments, Shade! Actually a lions share of the credit goes to Eisner himself as the Spirit and 3 thugs, while not directly copied are pretty strongly based on events on the cover of Spirit Magazine #39. The messy, gritty way Eisner used to do fights was something I thought was better handled by referencing the master himself. I did try to give Denny more of that swollen face like a boxer gets after a fight though.

ya know when i first saw this i was reminded of that Popeye image you did a while back similar to this. However. This is on a whole nuther level. You already know how I luv your recreation of Eisner's style of drawing in this and the added 3D elements just make this all the more better. I agree with Shade..one of your best!

Thanks Star... you definitely know the right thing to say to cheer me up :-) I had a bunch of great ideas going into this one about how to improve on my "Popeye" style however most of what I tried ranged from not working to not working as planned to working badly. Eventually I did manage to add at least a few new tricks to my bag but thought that my improvements on the technique were very modest so it's good to hear that you guys thought the final results paid off.

I concur with the comments made. I was surprised to see your name attached to this fine piece. It's just not what I normally see from you and it is quite impressive.

Thanks Force. I always try to mix it up a little, perhaps a bit more for this one. :-)

Yeah, I'm not impressed. Hah! Just kidden' Pij! As ya know I really dig what ya did with this one. I love the experimental nature of the pic in general - but yer dynamic and very nicely characterised drawing at the heart of the image are why I think this one kicks some ass! And a clever composition to boot. Kudos buddy!
